October 10, 2004 -- October 16, 2004

“Grace and Peace to you this Sabbath day in the name of Our Lord, Jesus Christ! We welcome you to this time of worship, where we come to celebrate God’s saving grace in and through the death and resurrection of Christ. May your heart and mind be filled anew with God’s presence! Welcome!"

Thought For The Day

Isn’t it Strange?

Isn’t it strange how a 20 dollar bill seems like such a large amount when you donate it to church, but such a small amount when you go shopping?
Isn’t it strange how endless an hour seems when we are serving God, but how short it is when we watch a basketball game?
Isn’t it strange how two hours seem so long when you’re at church, and how short they seem when you’re watching a good movie?
Isn’t it strange how difficult and boring it is to read one chapter of the Bible, but how easy it is to read 100 pages of a popular novel?
Isn’t it strange how everyone wants front row tickets to concerts or games, but they do whatever is possible to sit in the last row in church?
Isn’t it strange how difficult it is to learn a fact about God and share it with others, but how easy it is to learn, understand, extend and repeat gossip?
Isn’t it strange how we believe everything that magazines and newspapers say, but we questions the words in the Bible?
Isn’t it strange how everyone wants a place in heaven, but they don’t want to believe, do, or say anything to get there?
Isn’t it strange how well we tell jokes and they are passed right away, but when we are to send messages about God, we think about it twice before we share it with others?
Isn’t it strange?

Jazzercise October 13th Free Introduction

GUMC is pleased and disappointed at the same time! Our recent October Newsletter indicated we’d host Jazzercise, an aerobic class, beginning October 13th. Unfortunately, the zoning regulations for the locality in which our church resides will not permit Jazzercise to come here on a fee basis. Thus, the future of Jazzercise at GUMC is not possible. However, Beth Freeman, owner of the Jazzercise Franchise, has offered to provide free classes at our church beginning October 13th for a few weeks. Afterwards, we will be able to predict more accurately what the future of this program may look like. We encourage you to participate in this great program!

Donated Food Needed

When you do your grocery shopping, why not buy two of a particular item, (ie. Pasta, can of soups, cereal, etc). Bring these items to church and donate them to the Food Pantry Box in the church library. Carty and Bob Bates deliver our donation to the local Food Pantry which helps people in our community have who have special needs. Your support of this project would be greatly appreciated. -- United Methodist Women.

Crafty Ladies

In October the Crafty Ladies will be mailing “Thinking of You” boxes of goodies to our college students and military personnel. If you have a family member who would like to receive one of these boxes, please give his/her name and current mailing address to Millie Rider (642-9680) or Beth Hoffman (339-0810).
In Preparation for the UMW’s Snowflake Festival, Crafty Ladies will begin having weekly craft sessions. We will meet at the church every Monday at 9:30 am. All are welcome to join us.

Habitat for Humanity…Leaders Needed…
Can you swing a hammer...install an electrical box…hang dry-wall, or seed a lawn?—If so, you are not only a talented person, you are one that can represent a very significant ministry. Our congregation is currently looking for persons who have a passion for people, let alone “home building skills.” Why? It is simple: Our covenant relationship to the Adams County “Habitat for Humanity” program is sitting dormant, until leadership can be found. —This “dormant” status was recently discussed and approved by the Administrative Board. As a result, we invite any and all to prayerfully consider such an involvement. For further information, please call Jackie Angleberger, Mission Chair (624-8388), or the church office at 334-3032.

TV Awareness Week…October 10-17…
If it’s true that “you are what you eat,” then it must also be true that “you become what you watch!” Television, internet, and other forms of electronic media impact our lives daily…much beyond our knowledge.—Realizing this (in light of the positive and negative aspects of media), United Methodists throughout Central PA will be celebrating “TELEVISION AWARENESS WEEK,” October 10-17. Simply, it is a “time for persons of all ages to consider the personal, yet collective, impact television has, particularly, upon our lives.” THIS ISSUE OF THE “VISION” INCLUDES A BROCHURE, WHICH INVITES YOU (AS AN INDIVIDUAL AND/OR FAMILY) TO EVALUATE THE EFFECT OF THE TELEVISION UPON YOUR LIFE. The “survey chart” will ask you to rate aspects of the television you watch. As you do so, take the time to pray about it with your family and friends!—This ministry is supported by “TV Tune-In” and our Central PA conference.

Clothing Closet…G.U.M.C….Needs Help/Wants Clothes…
Have clothing you don’t wear?—Probably, it’s true, as many of us are well blessed with an over abundance in our closets. Unfortunately, this is not the case for everyone in our community.—Seeking to meet the need, a number of women from the Gettysburg area are organizing a “clothing closet.” Our Board of Trustees, under Hubert Goodwin’s leadership, has granted “dedicated space” on the lower level of the building for such a purpose.—It will all begin “officially” very soon.

You are invited to…1) Bring good, clean clothing for distribution (It will be given as a “gift”) And/or volunteer to be a worker in the “closet.” To do either, please call the coordinator, Mrs. Cathy Hernandez at 334-0006, ext 226. Thank you!

Welcoming New Members to Gettysburg UMC…
A number of person have recently expressed interest in uniting with our congregation. How delighted we are to have them so do!—At this moment we are anticipating that a welcoming will take place on Sunday, October 31st, at the 10:30 AM Worship hour. Equally, these persons, as others, are incited to share with Pastor Jay in two “Get acquainted” gatherings that will take place on Sundays, October 24th and 31st, at 9:15 AM in his office. For additional information, please contact Pastor Jay (334-3032), or Peggy Hunt (337-0539) our membership chairperson. Welcome!

ATTENTION KENNIE'S SHOPPERS!
If you are a frequent shopper at any Kennie's
Market location and you'd be willing to designate Big Brothers Big Sisters
of Adams County for the Community Treasures program, please contact Laura
Geesaman at 334-1138 or landt@pa.net

Regular and large print Bibles are available at the back of the church for your use.
We invite you to use one to follow along in the reading of today's scripture.

PEW ENVELOPES! You may have noticed the pew envelopes and on top of the mission can. These envelopes are to be used for donations to the church that are not covered by your regular envelopes. Some examples are mission can donations, special collections, special service offerings, etc. If the envelopes are used, we will be able to add that record to your giving statement. Please be sure to put your envelope number and/or name on the envelope so we know to which account it should be recorded. If you have any questions, please see Fred Myers or Connie Thompson.

Tape Ministry - Do you know a shut-in who would like to hear the word of God through our service on Sunday mornings? Or perhaps you didn’t get to church on Sunday and wanted to hear the message. The Tape Ministry in our church was established for these very reasons—to bring the word of God to everyone. It brings our church closer to those who are not able to attend. There is no charge for the ministry. You may keep the tape or if you would like, you can return them so we may use them again. God’s word and God’s gift are here for you! To request a tape, contact Edgar and Charlotte Moore at 334-1716, Dave Schmidt at 334-4325, or call the church office at 334-3032.

REMINDER: Please remember to call or e-mail the office by Tuesday prior to the Sunday you are sponsoring bulletins or altar flowers. Phone or mail reminders are no longer being issued - that information is now part of the newsletter. All announcements to be placed in the Weekly Vision must also be in the office by Tuesday. Thank you.
